SKIES, WATER & DEATH

SILVER ORIS & THE DISTILLERY GALLERY PRESENT: "Skies, Water & Death" writes a new story on human boundaries. The show brings existing and hidden worlds together with mortality, flow and uncertainty: a collapsed environment without physical, social, emotional or tangible boundaries. "Skies, Water & Death" looks closer into the tension of physical and mental worlds created in this inviting collision through drawing, printmaking, and sculpture.

65°: An Exhibition of Contemporary Encaustic Art at Nave Gallery Annex

65º is a remarkable encaustic art exhibition involving 25 female artists.  Encaustic painting is an ancient technique that artists continue to use today.  Generally, wax is heated to a liquid state and mixed with pigmentation. Once the mixture is perfectly melted, the artist will apply it to their surface, most often wood.  Then the surface itself can be heated to create a fusion of wax and wood.  Before the wax dries, metal tools or brushes can be used to transform the artwork.  Some artists embed interesting objects into the wax before it dries.  If the artist isn't happy with the outcome, they can reheat it and continue to alter the wax until they are satisfied.  Stop by Nave Gallery Annex to get an up-close glimpse of this wondrous technique.

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday DEC. 5, 6-9 pm

ARTISTS:
Leika Akiyama, Deborah Bohnert, Jodi Colella, Barbara Cone, Kindra Crick, Evelyn Davis-Walker, Joanne F. Desmond, Suzanne Gibbs, Eileen P. Goldenberg, Elizabeth Harris, Suzanne Hauerstein, …

The Slutcracker Burlesque Show At The Somerville Theater, November 30-December 31

The Slutcracker is a scene-by-scene retelling of The Nutcracker ballet which itself was adapted from the children’s story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A Hoffmann.

However, The Slutcracker is decidedly NOT for children. Indeed, The Slutcracker is a night for grown-ups, no matter how “immature” it might seem.

The story follows Clara, a twenty-something woman who, with the help of eccentric and willful Auntie Drosselmeyer and her very special gift of a magic “toy,” journeys from a suburban, hum-drum lifestyle and relationship with fiancé Fritz, to a land of sexual fantasy, adventure, and fulfillment accompanied by the Slutcracker Prince.

The show incorporates a variety of dance styles including ballet, jazz, flamenco, belly dance, hoop, hip-hop, and pole all set to the strains of famously sexually repressed Tchaikovsky.

The Slutcracker strives to be inclusive both of our performers and crew and of our audiences. While they certainly can’t make everyone happy, they do welcome all…
